Imperial College London Mathematics School aims to support young people from across the local area who enjoy maths and science. We do this through delivering a programme of activities in schools and on campus.

We have developed and launched an exciting range of outreach activities for students from KS3 to KS4. Outreach activities take place in-school, after-school and during holidays and include workshops, masterclasses, taster events (online and in person) and competitions. Please contact us if you have any suggestions or ideas about our outreach work.

We have partnered with Axiom Maths (formerly MESME) to deliver Maths Circles to students in local schools. Our first cohort is currently comprised of Year 8 and 9 students, and in the Autumn term of 2024 they were joined by our second cohort, consisting of Year 7 students.

These sessions are held each Wednesday afternoon, with one in every four sessions being in-person at ICLMS and the rest being online via Zoom or Microsoft Teams. Students are mentored by Imperial College London undergraduate students and the lessons are organised into 'maths circles'; groups of 5-7 students plus one mentor. In these smaller groups, students get a chance to explore problem solving methods and discuss in detail their working.

If you wish to know more about Axiom Maths, visit their webite or email outreach@iclms.ac.uk.
ICLMS Maths Extra
ICLMS Maths Extra

In the summer term 2024 we started our second year of hosting Maths Extra - a course for Year 10 students after school on a Tuesday.

The sessions cover topics in AQA level 2 Further Maths and are designed to extend students' understanding of GCSE mathematics and mathematical problem solving. By taking part in Maths Extra, we hope that students will be set up for success in their GCSEs, and also gain the skills necessary to make a flying start to A Level Maths and/or Further Maths.

As part of our aim to widen participation, preference will be given to who are from groups currently underrepresented in the mathematical sciences. We are specifically looking for students who are studying at state schools, female and non-binary students, and students in receipt of Free School Meals or Pupil Premium funding to take part, but all students are welcome to apply.

Maths Extra will be open again for new applicants at the start of the next academic year. If you have any questions about the course, please contact outreach@iclms.ac.uk

Physics Mondays with Orbytz

In the summer term 2024 started a research-based course for year 9 students. This course runs after school on Mondays at ICLMS and focuses on practical astronomy and physics research. Physics Mondays covers material beyond GCSE physics and mathematics, allows students a glimpse of what goes into being a researcher, and shows them their potential as scientists.

At the start of the autumn term 2024, we will partner with Orbyts, a multi-award-winning movement that partners scientists with schools to empower school students to undertake world-leading research. The practical work the students put in throughout the summer term will help them thrive as they work alongside real physicists and astronomers.

Physics Mondays will be open again for new applications at the start of the next academic year. If you have any questions, please email outreach@iclms.ac.uk

Mathematical Olympiad for Girls Masterclasses
Mathematical Olympiad for Girls Masterclasses

In the second half of the summer term 2024 we launched a masterclass aimed at preparing students to sit the Mathematical Olympiad for Girls (MOG). Teachers nominate suitable students in years 9 and 10 for this opportunity. We provide the students with an environment where they can prepare for the MOG with the help of enthusiastic teachers and high-attainers like themselves.

Students who have achieved high grades in the Intermediate Mathematical Challenge, in particular qualifying for follow-on rounds (Grey and Pink Kangaroo, or Cayley or Maclaurin Olympiads) are most likely to benefit from this programme. If your school does not offer the MOG, this should not prevent students from being nominated; we can also provide students with support with applying for and sitting the MOG.
